Alfredo De la María is one of my favorite automotive painters of all time.  His unmistakable style combines the art of impressionism and realism yielding such excitement and emotion in his work that the cars look like they tear themselves free from the canvas! Dela Maria incorporates an incredible amount of detail in his work allowing one to really appreciate the painting. There is always a story to tell when one observes his work. It’s not just a matter of one racing car going through the motion of circling a track.   The cars themselves taken on an almost humanistic character with their own unique expression.  There is just enough exaggeration added to the ultra realistic style to give it that extra emotional quality.  There is so much depth and meaning from the technique, color palette, emotion, and story telling that it reminds you of some of the great artists from the 1600′s.    I can’t tell you how much inspiration I get from looking at this master!

Born in Uruguay in 1945, De la María studied art and architecture at the Bellas Artes School, in Montevideo. At a very early age of 18, De la María got involved in illustration working for a leading newspaper in Montevideo. De la María then went on to painting naval and aviation subject matter which only increased the demand for his work. In 1966, he settled in Paris for a few years continuing on with the development of his unique painting style before returning back to Montevideo illustrating covers for magazines such as Automundo, Parabrisas, El Tony and Dartagnan.

Honestly, I can go on all day about this guy and write multiple posts.  Just look at the sense of speed he creates from his layered brush strokes.  He captures the excitement, energy, and the brutal reality of races from 50′s and 60′s.  All evident from the expression on the drivers,  spectators, and the cars themselves!  He is another prime example of an individual that is passionate about their area of expertise! I truly believe that anyone that can dedicate themselves and put in hard work can achieve stellar results. It just takes time, patience, diligence, and practice.   Just check out additional work at his website, www.delamaria.com.  I don’t know about you but I’m buyin’ some paints tomorrow !!  Time to get inspired and start painting folks!!
