Drawing on Craft paper!

by Arvind Ramkrishna on March 13, 2010

Craft paper is awesome stuff to work on.  Especially with old grand prix cars from the 60′s.  Craft paper always adds that additional “vintage” weathered look to your drawings.  Here are couple drawings from the old archives!  Did these a couple years ago and had them in my www.hotsketch.wordpress.com blog.   Using craft paper is a little similar to canson paper in that it gives you some tooth and texture to the illustration which adds it’s own charm and dynamic. Of course you sort of have to deal with more of a duo-tone drawing rather than using the color of the paper as a base color of the car.  Canson allows you to do all this.

I have an excellent reference book called American Racing: Road Racing in the 50′s and 60′s by photographer Tom Burnside. It’s just a fantastic book capturing iconic images from several memorable races from that era.  What is so wonderful is the excitement and energy portrayed  in each picture giving an account of the events that are taking place in that scene.  Each picture depicts a sensational story leaving you wondering what it would be like to be a part of that era!

Hope you enjoy and keep drawing!

Wow. These are great, especially the one with the plane. Clearly, craft paper is the perfect medium for a period subject matter — in fact, you've inspired me. I'm going to do a classic motorcycle sketch tomorrow…
