Vintage Grand Prix Car Art Series 1: 1950′s Conceptual Grand Prix Cars

1950′s Conceptual Grand Prix Car:

This painting was incredibly fun to create.  Pure testosterone, muscle, and burning gasoline is what this painting is all about!  Typically I like to use some sort of reference when creating vintage race cars from a particular era or year.  However, in this case, I decided to create my own conceptual grand prix car to capture certain elements that symbolized what a race car meant to me.

After drawing a few of these cars, you develop a 3D form vocabulary for how these cars are drawn.    They are basically cigar shaped vehicles.  I wanted to create an image that communicated masculinity, raw power, and muscle.  Special attention was given to the large exhaust.  I had originally drawn the exhaust a little bit smaller and hidden by the dust and debris created by the wheels.   I always wrestle with the idea of making images believable vs fun and finding that right balance.  Looking at this image, I can find many things that I would change.  However every artwork created is a reflection of where you are, at that point in time.  The more you paint, the more experience you attain which therefore adds more depth to your work.

I have more traditional looking paintings that capture the essence of the moment.  1960′s Monaco Grand Prix with Sterling Moss racing though to the finish line was another fun painting to create.

If any of you are looking for a particular era, let me know!  Would love to try something new.
